US President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership against terrorism in Nigeria, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to stronger security cooperation. In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump commended Tinubu’s efforts to combat terrorism and protect vulnerable communities. He also pledged continued collaboration through intelligence sharing, military training, and joint operations to strengthen Nigeria’s security.
Trump Commends Tinubu’s Anti-Terrorism Efforts
President Trump described Tinubu’s leadership as decisive and expressed support for Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorist groups.
In the letter, Trump thanked Tinubu for his message and praised his determination to address insecurity.
“I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.
He also applauded Tinubu’s commitment to tackling violence affecting Christian communities.
According to Trump, the United States stands firmly with Nigeria in confronting terrorism.
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” he stated.
US-Nigeria Security Partnership Deepens
Trump stressed that the relationship between the United States and Nigeria remains vital as security threats spread across West Africa.
He noted that both countries share a common objective of defeating terrorism in all its forms.
The US President highlighted the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as the foundation for stronger military collaboration.
Furthermore, he said the agreement provides a robust framework for improving joint counter-terrorism efforts.
Joint Working Group Strengthens Cooperation
In November last year, Presidents Trump and Tinubu agreed to establish a Joint Working Group.
The National Security Advisers of both countries jointly lead the initiative.
Since then, both governments have expanded cooperation through:
- Intelligence sharing
- Military training
- Joint security operations
- Counter-terrorism planning
These measures aim to reduce terrorist activities across Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.
Major Operation Targets ISIS Leadership
One of the partnership’s biggest achievements came on May 16.
A coordinated operation targeted ISIS hideouts around the Lake Chad area.
The operation eliminated the group’s top leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, alongside several senior commanders.
The successful mission demonstrated the growing effectiveness of US-Nigeria military cooperation.
US Reaffirms Commitment During Abuja Visit
Last week, US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia visited Abuja.
During the visit, Garcia met senior Nigerian government officials.
He reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to expanding cooperation in security and other strategic sectors.
Trump Highlights US Military Support
Trump also praised the bravery of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
He said the United States deployed elite Special Operations Forces to train Nigerian troops.
According to him, the programme provides advanced skills, intelligence, and operational tools needed to protect the country.
He added that the partnership would continue throughout his presidency.
