Authorities in Delta State have arrested 15 suspects over the harassment of women during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Isoko North LGA. The incident occurred in Oramudu Quarters during a traditional celebration. Police say criminal elements exploited the event to harass attendees. Investigations are ongoing to identify all perpetrators. Officials also clarified that no rape cases were recorded.
Police Arrest 15 Suspects Over Festival Misconduct
Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 11 additional suspects. This brings the total number in custody to 15.
According to police spokesman Bright Edafe, operatives acted on credible intelligence and video evidence. The CP Special Assignment Team carried out the arrests.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, ordered a full investigation. He condemned the acts and promised prosecution.
Police urged witnesses to provide useful information. They assured the public of confidentiality and protection.
Government Condemns Harassment, Warns Against Criminality
Delta State Government strongly condemned the incident. Commissioner Charles Aniagwu described the reports as disturbing.
He stressed that cultural festivals must not shield criminal acts. He also stated that the government will protect women and vulnerable groups.
Moreover, he called on security agencies to arrest all offenders. He insisted that no group should misuse tradition for wrongdoing.
The government also advised the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
Ozoro Kingdom Clarifies Festival Practice
Leaders of Ozoro Kingdom denied claims of widespread rape. They described such reports as false and misleading.
They explained that the Alue-Do Festival promotes fertility blessings. Traditionally, participants perform symbolic acts like playful sand pouring.
However, some youths misused the practice. Their actions led to the harassment of two young women.
Community leaders condemned the misconduct. They emphasized that such behavior is not part of their culture.
Social Media Claims Spark Public Outrage
Earlier reports described the event as a “rape festival.” These claims quickly spread across social media platforms.
As a result, public concern increased sharply. Advocacy groups demanded urgent action and accountability.
However, authorities clarified that no rape cases were recorded. They reiterated that only harassment incidents occurred.
