The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday in Abuja dismissed a viral report claiming it operates a “ransom clause.” The scheme described the allegation as false and misleading. It also reassured Nigerians about the safety of corps members nationwide.
NYSC Denies Viral “Ransom Clause” Report
The NYSC rejected the report and urged the public to ignore it.
According to the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme has no such provision. She stressed that no law, guideline, or publication supports the claim.
“The claim is entirely fictitious and should be disregarded,” the statement said.
Misinformation Sparks Public Concern
However, the report triggered anxiety among families. Many feared for corps members posted to high-risk areas.
The NYSC noted that fake news has targeted the scheme repeatedly. It warned that misinformation can damage trust and create unnecessary panic.
Therefore, it advised the media and the public to verify information before sharing.
Safety Measures for Corps Members
The scheme highlighted several steps taken to protect corps members.
First, it relocated orientation camps from high-risk areas. States affected include Kebbi, Kaduna, Kwara, Borno, Gombe, and Plateau.
Second, it provides military escorts in dangerous locations. This measure has remained consistent in the North West since 2024.
In addition, the NYSC maintains life insurance and health coverage for all corps members.
Insurance and Welfare Support
All corps members receive life insurance through Capital Express Assurance Limited. The policy extends three weeks after service ends.
They also benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The NYSC stated that these measures reflect its commitment to safety and welfare.
Clarification on Musa Abba Case
The controversy also involved Musa Usman Abba. Some reports wrongly linked him to the NYSC.
However, the scheme clarified that he completed his service in 2023. Therefore, he is not a serving corps member.
The NYSC expressed sympathy for him and his family.
NYSC Reaffirms Commitment to National Unity
The scheme, established in 1973, promotes national unity and development. It posts graduates across Nigeria to foster integration.
Despite security challenges in some regions, the NYSC continues to work with security agencies.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting corps members nationwide.
Call for Vigilance Against Fake News
Finally, the NYSC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant. It emphasized that misinformation can deepen fear and weaken institutions.
“The NYSC remains committed to the safety and well-being of all corps members,” the statement concluded.
