Zamfara Approves N87bn Health Budget to Upgrade 23 Hospitals and PHCs

The Zamfara State Government, led by Dauda Lawal, has approved N87 billion for healthcare in 2026. The plan targets 23 facilities across all 14 LGAs. It focuses on renovation, expansion, and equipment upgrades. The budget aims to improve access, quality, and infrastructure statewide.


Overview of Zamfara 2026 Budget

Governor Lawal presented an N861.3 billion budget on December 4, 2025. Lawmakers later approved it. He signed the revised N871.337 billion appropriation bill on December 19.

The budget allocates N714 billion for capital projects. This represents 83 percent of total spending. Meanwhile, recurrent expenditure stands at N147.28 billion, or 17 percent.

Key sectors include health, infrastructure, security, education, and agriculture.


Breakdown of Health Sector Allocation

The government earmarked N87 billion for healthcare improvements. This funding covers general hospitals and primary healthcare centres (PHCs).

Additionally, the state approved N1.8 billion for medical equipment across nine hospitals.


General Hospitals Set for Upgrade

Nine general hospitals will undergo renovation and expansion:

  • Talata Mafara General Hospital – N4 billion
  • Gummi General Hospital – N2.2 billion
  • Dansadau General Hospital – N2 billion
  • Gusau General Hospital – N2 billion
  • Bungudu General Hospital – N2 billion
  • Moriki General Hospital – N500 million
  • General Hospital Anka – N200 million
  • General Hospital Magami – N200 million
  • General Hospital Mada – N200 million

These upgrades aim to boost service delivery and patient care.


Primary Healthcare Centres Targeted

The government also selected 14 PHCs for overhaul and expansion. Key allocations include:

  • Kaura Namoda LGA
  • Talata Mafara LGA
  • Gummi LGA
  • Maru LGA
  • Bungudu LGA

  • Shinkafi LGA

  • Birnin Magaji LGA
  • Bukkuyum LGA
  • Anka LGA
  • Bakura LGA
  • Maradun LGA

These projects will strengthen primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.


Government’s Health Sector Strategy

The administration aims to revamp healthcare across all LGAs. It focuses on infrastructure, staffing, and equipment.

Moreover, the plan seeks to reduce medical travel and improve rural access. Residents should experience better services closer to home.
