Hundreds of protesters marched on Wednesday in KuGompo city, South Africa, demanding the closure of California Tavern, a nightclub linked to Nigerians, over alleged drug sales, as police intervened to prevent violence.
Protesters Demand Nightclub Closure
Protesters moved through KuGompo city centre, calling for authorities to shut down California Tavern. They accused the nightclub of enabling drug-related activities.
Nondumiso Tyiso, one of the organisers, alleged that drugs were sold openly at the venue. She insisted the community could no longer tolerate such operations.
Tensions Linked to Anti-Immigrant Protests
The march followed last week’s demonstrations led by Operation Dudula. The group protested against immigrants in the area.
Those protests reportedly began after the “crowning” of a Nigerian “king” in Buffalo City. Soon after, violence escalated.
During the unrest, attackers looted Somali-owned shops and set several vehicles on fire. As a result, fear spread across immigrant communities.
Businesses Shut Down Amid Fear
On Wednesday, many immigrant-owned businesses in KuGompo city centre closed early. Owners feared possible attacks during the protest.
Meanwhile, police increased their presence across key locations. Officers monitored the situation closely to prevent further violence.
Police Block Attempt to Enter Hotel
Protesters attempted to enter the Belgrave Hotel, where the nightclub operates. However, police officers quickly blocked access.
Hazel Mqala, spokesperson for KuGompo city police, confirmed officers acted to prevent damage and violence. She stressed that police must protect all residents.
Mqala also revealed that officers had previously seized drugs during patrols in the area. Therefore, authorities remained alert throughout the protest.
Arrests and Security Measures
Later, Nobuntu Gantana of the South African Police Service said officers dispersed some individuals involved in criminal acts. They used stun grenades and rubber bullets.
Police arrested one suspect for assaulting an officer. The suspect will appear in court soon.
In addition, authorities opened 11 criminal cases linked to last week’s unrest. They also arrested two suspects connected to those incidents.
Nightclub Owners Announce Closure
Following the protest, the owners of the Belgrave Hotel decided to shut down California Tavern. This move aims to ease tensions in the area.
