Boko Haram IED kills commanding officer, 10 soldiers in Monguno attack

The Commanding Officer of the 242 Battalion, Col. I.A. Mohammed, and at least 10 soldiers died on Sunday night in Monguno, Borno State, after Boko Haram insurgents detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during a military operation.

Troops repel insurgents after fierce battle

According to Sani Uba, media information officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, insurgents attacked troops at the Charlie 13 location. However, soldiers resisted the assault and forced the attackers to retreat after intense gunfire.

Commanding officer killed while leading from the front

Meanwhile, Col. Mohammed moved toward the frontline to assess the situation. Sadly, he drove into an IED planted by the insurgents. The explosion destroyed his vehicle and killed him alongside six soldiers instantly.

Uba praised the officer’s bravery and leadership. He said the colonel showed courage, selfless service, and strong commitment to his troops.

Military mourns fallen heroes

Furthermore, Operation Hadin Kai expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The military described the late officer as exceptional and dedicated to duty.

“Their sacrifice will remain in the memory of the Armed Forces and the nation,” the statement added.

Rising attacks in Borno State

Notably, this incident occurred days after another deadly attack in Benisheikh, Borno State. Terrorists killed two soldiers and two officers, including Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the senior officer died while defending Nigeria.

Security concerns persist

Consequently, the latest attack highlights ongoing security challenges in the North-East. Authorities continue efforts to curb insurgency and protect communities.
