The caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Abuja called for the prosecution and removal of Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over alleged partisanship, citing concerns about the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
ADC Raises Alarm Over Electoral Integrity
During its inaugural meeting, the ADC caucus reviewed recent political developments. Members expressed strong concerns about INEC’s neutrality.
They accused Prof. Amupitan of actions that undermine his role as an impartial electoral umpire. According to them, his conduct could weaken public trust.
Controversy Over Alleged Social Media Activity
The lawmakers pointed to claims that the INEC chairman once operated a personal X account. They alleged that the account supported the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
They also claimed the account shared controversial posts about alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria. However, INEC denied any link between Prof. Amupitan and the account.
Despite this denial, the caucus insisted that digital forensic findings suggest otherwise. Therefore, they questioned his integrity and transparency.
Claims of Interference in ADC Leadership Dispute
Furthermore, the caucus accused INEC of interfering in the party’s internal affairs. They alleged that the commission recognised an illegitimate faction.
They argued that the faction led by David Mark had already met INEC’s requirements. As a result, they described INEC’s actions as unconstitutional.
Allegations of Judicial Collusion
In addition, the lawmakers alleged collusion between INEC officials and some judicial officers. They claimed this could influence a pending court case on April 14, 2026.
They cited Section 83(5) of the Electoral Act 2026. According to them, courts lack jurisdiction over internal party matters.
Consequently, they warned against judicial overreach and political interference.
Plan to Petition National Judicial Council
The caucus announced plans to petition the National Judicial Council (NJC). They demanded investigations into alleged judicial compromise.
They also called for sanctions against any judges found guilty of misconduct.
The lawmakers referenced concerns raised by Afam Osigwe, President of the Nigerian Bar Association. He had warned about growing perceptions of judicial bias.
Call to Protect Nigeria’s Democracy
The caucus described the situation as a serious threat to democracy. Therefore, they urged Nigerians to defend democratic institutions.
They also highlighted the legacies of respected jurists like Chukwudifu Oputa, Niki Tobi, Kayode Eso, and Mohammed Uwais.
According to them, those figures upheld strong judicial integrity, unlike current perceptions.
Conclusion
The ADC caucus stressed that INEC must show true independence. They insisted that transparency and credibility remain essential ahead of 2027 elections.
