Gunmen Abduct 15 Passengers on Makurdi–Otukpo Highway

Suspected gunmen abducted 15 passengers on April 15, 2026, around 8:30pm along the Makurdi–Otukpo highway in Benue State. The attackers intercepted a Benue Links bus near Operation Whirl Stroke barracks. The vehicle carried 18 passengers from Makurdi to Otukpo when the incident occurred.


How the Attack Unfolded

According to reports, the assailants blocked the highway and stopped the Toyota Hiace bus. The vehicle bore registration number BGT 224 SA.

The driver, identified as Peter Ikwe, later reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer in Otukpo.

During the attack, the gunmen forcefully took 15 passengers into the bush. However, a few passengers escaped from the scene.


Swift Security Response

Following the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer quickly mobilised patrol teams. Tactical units also moved to the area without delay.

In addition, joint security operatives began combing nearby bushes. Their goal remains clear: rescue the victims and arrest the attackers.


Police Launch Investigation

The Benue State Police Command confirmed that its Anti-Kidnapping Unit has started a full investigation.

Officials stated that ongoing operations continue across the area. They also assured the public that updates will follow as new developments emerge.


Rising Concerns Over Highway Security

This incident has raised fresh concerns about safety along the Makurdi–Otukpo road. Residents and travelers now demand stronger security presence on the route.
