Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that the African Democratic Congress will adopt a consensus approach to select its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. He added that the party will conduct primaries if consensus fails.
Consensus First, Primaries as Backup
Atiku stressed that the party will prioritise consensus in selecting its flagbearer. However, he confirmed that the party will conduct primaries if consensus fails.
“I will support anybody who emerges,” he said.
He also expressed readiness to step aside for any candidate chosen through a fair process. In addition, he welcomed contenders like Peter Obi, stating openness to competition.
2027 Marks Atiku’s Final Presidential Attempt
Atiku made it clear that the 2027 election will be his last presidential bid.
“The stakes are higher. This will be my last outing,” he said.
He described the decision as final and non-negotiable. Therefore, he plans to give the race his full commitment.
Experience Versus Youth Debate
Responding to criticism, Atiku argued that he represents both experience and forward-thinking leadership.
He noted that younger leaders have had opportunities but have not fully met expectations.
According to him, experience remains vital for effective governance. He added that mentorship plays a key role in leadership development.
Lessons from Obasanjo Era
Atiku reflected on his time under Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.
He said the experience shaped his leadership skills and governance approach.
“Young leaders need exposure and mentorship to succeed,” he explained.
Criticism of Tinubu’s Administration
Atiku criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing his performance as disappointing.
He raised concerns about governance and economic direction.
Furthermore, he warned against the concentration of power within the presidency, calling it dangerous for democracy.
Push for Broad Political Coalition
Atiku confirmed his role in building a coalition ahead of 2027.
He said the alliance includes members from APC, PDP, NNPP, and Labour Party.
According to him, Nigeria’s political history shows that coalitions increase electoral success.
“The only future is a broad coalition,” he added.
Northern Support Base and Zoning Advocacy
Atiku reaffirmed strong support in Northern Nigeria, describing it as his major political base.
He also advocated constitutional recognition of zoning.
He believes formal zoning will ensure fairness and balance in power rotation.
Looking Ahead to the Next Generation
Despite his ambition, Atiku acknowledged that Nigeria’s future belongs to younger leaders.
He urged the next generation to prepare for leadership responsibilities.
