Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has confirmed ongoing contract talks with the Nigeria Football Federation while preparing Nigeria for upcoming fixtures in June. The Franco-Malian tactician spoke during an interview with Osasu Obayiuwana, explaining that his agent handles negotiations as he focuses on team duties. Chelle plans to arrive in Nigeria soon to scout players in the Nigeria Premier Football League. His immediate attention remains on rebuilding the squad and preparing for international friendlies and the Unity Cup 2026 in London.
Chelle Prioritises Team Preparation Over Contract Talks
Chelle made it clear that he will not allow contract discussions to distract him. He stated that his agent manages financial negotiations with the federation.
“I want to concentrate on the job and the task at hand,” he said.
Although talks continue, Chelle maintains full commitment to the Super Eagles. His current contract runs until January 2027.
Super Eagles Set for High-Profile Friendlies
Nigeria will face Poland and Portugal in June friendlies. These matches will test the squad against strong European opposition.
Moreover, Chelle sees these fixtures as key opportunities to evaluate his evolving team. He aims to build a balanced squad ahead of future tournaments.
Unity Cup 2026: Title Defence in London
Attention has shifted to the Unity Cup 2026 in London, where Nigeria will defend their title.
The Super Eagles will open against Zimbabwe at The Valley on May 26. Depending on the result, they will face either Jamaica or India in the next round.
This tournament will serve as another platform for Chelle to refine his squad.
Focus on NPFL and Diaspora Talent
Chelle has outlined a broad scouting strategy. He plans to monitor home-based players in the NPFL closely.
At the same time, he will assess uncapped players of Nigerian descent playing abroad. This dual approach aims to expand the national team’s talent pool.
Consequently, the coach hopes to create stronger competition within the squad.
Growing Interest Despite Commitment
Recent reports suggest that Chelle has attracted interest from other teams. This follows Nigeria’s strong performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished third.
However, Chelle has reaffirmed his commitment to the Super Eagles project. He remains focused on long-term progress rather than external distractions.
