Gunmen attacked Gako Village in Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, late Sunday night, killing a pastor, his wife, and two children during a violent invasion that also destroyed farmlands and displaced residents.
Deadly Night Attack in Gako Community
The attackers invaded the village around 11 p.m. and opened fire on residents. They killed Reverend Ayuba Choji, his wife Chundung Ayuba, and their children Cyril and Endurance Ayuba.
Residents said the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers. They shot sporadically and caused widespread panic. Consequently, families fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Residents Describe Terror and Displacement
A resident, Martha Dalyop, said the attackers struck while people slept. She explained that gunfire forced many villagers to abandon their homes.
“They came late at night and started shooting everywhere,” she said. “People ran into the bush. We are not safe in our homes.”
She added that repeated attacks have made life unbearable. Many residents no longer sleep in their houses. Others avoid their farmlands due to fear.
Coordinated Attacks Target Communities and Farms
The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Rwang Tengwong, described the attacks as coordinated. He said the attackers operate in groups with clear roles.
According to him, one group attacks residents. Another group destroys farmlands. Meanwhile, a third group blocks roads to stop rescue efforts.
He stressed that this pattern shows planning and coordination. As a result, communities suffer both human and economic losses.
Farmlands Destroyed in Barkin Ladi
Within 48 hours of the attack, gunmen also destroyed large farmlands in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. They damaged cabbage, pepper, and maize farms.
Farmers now face worsening hardship. Many cannot access their fields. Consequently, food security in the area continues to decline.
Police Yet to Respond Publicly
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in the state failed. Calls and messages received no response at the time of filing this report.
However, residents continue to demand stronger security presence. They also call for urgent intervention to stop further attacks.
Growing Insecurity in Plateau Communities
The latest killings add to rising violence in Plateau State. Communities in Riyom and Barkin Ladi continue to experience repeated attacks.
Therefore, residents now live in fear. Many have abandoned farming activities and rural homes.
Conclusion
The attack on Gako Village highlights ongoing insecurity in Plateau State. Gunmen killed a pastor and his family, destroyed farmlands, and displaced residents. Meanwhile, communities continue to call for urgent security action.
