Sule Lamido Urges Goodluck Jonathan to Avoid 2027 Politics, Calls Return Campaign ‘Desperation’

By Elizabeth Ugbo

As political alignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Jigawa State Governor and PDP chieftain Sule Lamido has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to stay away from partisan politics. Lamido made the statement on Wednesday through a Facebook post, where he urged Jonathan to reject calls for a political comeback, arguing that the campaign lacks direction and reflects public frustration over Nigeria’s current situation.

Lamido Rejects Calls for Jonathan’s Return

Lamido said recent appeals encouraging Jonathan to re-enter active politics do not stem from a clear political vision.

According to him, supporters pushing for Jonathan’s return are acting out of frustration rather than presenting a structured national agenda.

He described the movement as an emotional response to the country’s political and economic challenges.

“While the call is appreciated, it is a desperation call lacking in any depth beyond being a ventilator of frustration,” Lamido stated.

He maintained that those promoting Jonathan’s return have not offered any coherent framework capable of addressing Nigeria’s present realities.

Former Governor Warns Against Political Exploitation

Lamido urged Jonathan to avoid what he called “ego-caressing” appeals from political actors seeking to benefit from the former president’s reputation.

He argued that dragging Jonathan into current political contests could weaken the image he has built since leaving office.

According to Lamido, Jonathan occupies a respected position both within Nigeria and internationally.

“It is unfair and ill-opportune to drag his person into the current murky political arena populated by unserious, self-seeking and self-serving characters.”

Lamido stressed that Jonathan should preserve his status as an elder statesman rather than return to electoral battles.

Jonathan’s Legacy Should Remain Protected

The PDP leader said former presidents deserve dignity and should remain above intense partisan struggles.

He added that Jonathan belongs to a category of global leaders whose influence extends beyond election cycles.

Lamido warned that active participation in current political rivalries could reduce the respect Jonathan currently commands.

Criticism of Nigeria’s Political Environment

Lamido also criticised Nigeria’s wider political climate.

He argued that many political parties currently lack clear ideological foundations and remain focused mainly on capturing power ahead of 2027.

According to him, political actors should prioritise governance ideas and national development instead of personality-driven campaigns.
