Kogi Security Operatives Foil Terrorist Attack in Ijumu, Prevent Mass Abduction

Kogi security operatives foiled a terrorist attack in Ikoyi, Ijumu Local Government Area, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, after armed bandits targeted a gathering of Tiv residents. The attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. when the assailants allegedly planned to abduct participants and cause panic. However, security personnel responded within five minutes, engaged the attackers in a gun battle, and forced them to flee, preventing a major security crisis.

Security Forces Repel Attack in Ikoyi Community

The Kogi State Government confirmed that security agencies successfully thwarted the attack in Ikoyi, Ijumu Local Government Area.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, armed bandits exploited a gathering of Tiv residents and launched an assault on the community.

The government stated that the gathering violated an existing security directive restricting public social gatherings beyond 4:00 p.m.

However, security operatives reacted swiftly and prevented the attackers from carrying out their mission.

Rapid Security Response Stops Planned Abductions

Fanwo said personnel of the Nigerian Military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters arrived at the scene within five minutes.

Their quick deployment denied the criminals the opportunity to abduct residents.

Consequently, a fierce gun battle erupted between security forces and the attackers.

The bandits later abandoned their operation and fled into nearby forests.

“Their rapid intervention denied the bandits the opportunity to execute their mission, leading to a fierce gun battle that forced the criminals to abandon their plans and flee,” Fanwo said.

He added that the coordinated efforts of security agencies prevented the abduction of any resident.

One Resident Killed, Another Injured

Despite the successful operation, one member of the Tiv community lost his life during the exchange of gunfire.

In addition, another resident sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The government expressed regret over the casualty while commending security personnel for their bravery.

Security Agencies Launch Manhunt for Fleeing Bandits

The state government disclosed that intelligence reports indicate several attackers suffered gunshot wounds during the confrontation.

Security agencies have since launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects.

Authorities urged residents to report anyone with suspicious gunshot wounds or individuals seeking treatment for firearm-related injuries.

The government stressed that public cooperation remains crucial to the success of ongoing security operations.

Community-Based Security Strategy Delivers Results

According to the government, the incident highlights the effectiveness of Kogi State’s community-based security framework.

Officials noted that collaboration among the military, police, vigilante operatives, and local hunters played a decisive role in preventing the attack.

“The extraordinary response time of less than five minutes proved decisive in frustrating the attackers and preventing what could have been a major security disaster,” the statement noted.

Vigilante Service and Hunters Strengthen Security Efforts

The government also praised the Kogi State Vigilante Service for enhancing intelligence gathering and rapid response operations.

Officials attributed the improvement to the integration of the service into the mainstream civil service under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration.

Fanwo further commended local hunters for supporting grassroots security efforts across the state.

He described them as a critical part of the state’s first line of defence against criminal elements.

Government Urges Compliance with Security Directives

The Kogi State Government reiterated the need for residents to obey all security directives.

It specifically warned against unauthorised gatherings in vulnerable locations and during restricted hours.

Security agencies have received instructions to enforce these measures to protect lives and property.

The government also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible intelligence to security authorities.
