Operatives of the Katsina State Police Command rescued nine kidnapped passengers on Friday, June 12, 2026, after engaging armed bandits in a fierce gun battle along the Katsina-Kankara Road at Tashar Kanya Village in Kankara Local Government Area. The swift operation followed a distress call after gunmen abducted 11 passengers travelling from Dandume to Katsina. While nine victims regained their freedom, security operatives continue searching for the remaining two victims and the fleeing suspects.
Bandits Attack Commercial Vehicle
According to the Police Command, the incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. when armed bandits blocked the Katsina-Kankara highway.
The attackers intercepted a red commercial Volkswagen Golf III saloon car with registration number KMC 400 MK. Aliyu, popularly known as “Maitakabari,” drove the vehicle.
The car carried 11 passengers from Dandume to Katsina. The bandits forcefully abducted every occupant.
Police Launch Immediate Rescue Operation
Following the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kankara quickly mobilised a joint security team.
The operation involved personnel from the Divisional Police Division and the Violent Crime Rescue Unit (VCRU).
The team tracked the kidnappers and confronted them in a fierce gunfight.
Police said the bandits fled into nearby bushes after facing superior firepower and tactical pressure.
Nine Victims Regain Freedom
After securing the area, officers searched the surrounding bushes and rescued nine victims unharmed.
The rescued victims include:
- Abubakar Ibrahim, 28
- Rakkiya Ya’u, 30
- Shamsiya Ahmad Mahamud, 18
- Jumai Majarazu, 20
- Salamatu Adamu, 30
- Yusuf Halliru, 17
- Harira Hamisu, 25
- Umma Kabir, 17
- Three-year-old Nusaiba Majarazu
However, Buhari Kabir and the driver, Aliyu “Maitakabari,” remain in captivity.
Search Continues for Remaining Victims
The Police Command confirmed that rescue efforts remain active.
Security operatives continue searching for the remaining victims while pursuing the fleeing kidnappers.
Commissioner Commends Officers
Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, praised the officers for their courage and professionalism during the operation.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes across the state.
The Commissioner also urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help prevent criminal activities.
