Real Madrid Strengthen Defence with Cucurella Signing
Real Madrid continue to reshape their squad after bringing back Jose Mourinho as head coach.
Reports claim the Spanish champions reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Marc Cucurella for €55 million ($63 million). The transfer will become official after the Club World Cup.
Cucurella, 27, joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022. Before moving to England, he developed through Barcelona’s famous academy and later impressed at Getafe.
Chelsea End Cucurella’s Three-Year Stay
The Spanish defender leaves Stamford Bridge after three seasons.
During his time at Chelsea, he helped the club win the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League in 2025.
However, Chelsea struggled in the Premier League last season. The Blues finished 10th, leading to widespread criticism from supporters and former players.
Cucurella also questioned the club’s decision to sack Enzo Maresca in January. Despite having two years left on his contract, Chelsea accepted Real Madrid’s offer.
Mourinho Continues Real Madrid Rebuild
Florentino Perez recently secured another term as Real Madrid president.
Soon after his re-election, he appointed Jose Mourinho as manager following two trophyless seasons.
The club has already begun an ambitious recruitment drive.
Reports suggest Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate could arrive when his contract expires. Real Madrid also continue to monitor Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries.
The addition of Cucurella would further strengthen Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new season.
What Cucurella’s Arrival Means
Cucurella brings valuable experience from both La Liga and the Premier League.
His energy, defensive discipline and attacking support make him an ideal option for Mourinho’s tactical system.
If completed, the transfer will become one of Real Madrid’s biggest defensive signings of the summer.
