Plateau State has confirmed 11 cholera cases, with five deaths and 53 suspected infections reported in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA). The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed the figures on Sunday in Jos, explaining that the government has activated an Incident Management System (IMS) to contain the outbreak, strengthen healthcare services, and prevent further spread.

Cholera Cases Concentrated in Mangu Communities

Baamlong said the confirmed and suspected cases were recorded in Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 communities within Mangu LGA.

He explained that the Ministry of Health has intensified public health interventions across the affected areas. The measures aim to contain the outbreak, reduce transmission, and protect residents.

Plateau Government Strengthens Emergency Response

According to the commissioner, the state has deployed additional Rapid Response Teams to the affected communities.

The ministry has also expanded treatment centres and increased isolation capacity. Furthermore, authorities have procured Rapid Diagnostic Test kits, intravenous fluids, and essential medicines to support patient care.

Baamlong noted that activating the Incident Management System ensures a coordinated and accountable emergency response. He added that the framework aligns with national and international emergency response standards.

Residents Urged to Follow Cholera Prevention Measures

The commissioner urged residents of Mangu LGA and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant.

He advised them to drink safe water, wash their hands regularly with soap, avoid open defecation, and dispose of waste properly.

Baamlong also encouraged residents to report anyone showing symptoms of cholera to the nearest healthcare facility for prompt medical attention.

Government Seeks Support From Partners

The commissioner reaffirmed the Plateau State Government’s commitment to protecting the health of residents.

He also called on development partners and relevant stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to control the outbreak.

What Is Cholera?

Baamlong explained that cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Early detection, prompt treatment, and improved sanitation remain critical to preventing severe illness and deaths.
