Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has pledged full government support for the family of Ummulkhairi Aliyu, an Islamic teacher who was lynched by a mob in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area, on June 14. The governor made the promise on Saturday during a condolence visit to the bereaved family, assuring them of financial support, quality education for the deceased’s four children, and justice for everyone involved in the killing.
Kaduna Government to Support Victim’s Family
Governor Sani said the Kaduna State Government would cater for the welfare of Ummulkhairi’s husband and four children.
“I also want to assure you that the Kaduna State Government will take responsibility for the welfare of the family. We will support the husband and ensure that the four children receive quality education,” he said.
The governor explained that he could not visit earlier because he was on an official assignment outside the state. However, he said he immediately directed senior government officials to console the family after receiving news of the incident.
Governor Condemns Mob Killing
Sani described the killing as barbaric and stressed that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.
According to him, the government remains committed to ensuring that every person connected to the attack faces justice.
“I am working with the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, and other relevant security agencies in Kaduna State to get to the root of the matter,” he said.
Police Charge 41 Suspects with Culpable Homicide
The governor disclosed that security agencies had made significant progress in the investigation.
He revealed that authorities had charged 41 suspects with culpable homicide. Investigators also questioned another 41 persons, bringing the total number investigated to 82. Additionally, prosecutors charged 30 suspects with unlawful assembly.
Sani vowed that every person found guilty would face the full weight of the law.
“Everyone found culpable will face the full wrath of the law. We must send a clear message that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” he added.
Governor Orders Investigation into Police Officer’s Role
Governor Sani commended security agencies for their swift response and ongoing investigation.
However, he directed authorities to investigate the role of some security personnel, especially the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Maraban Jos.
He insisted that any officer found negligent or guilty of compromising the investigation would also face appropriate sanctions.
Killing Sparked Nationwide Outrage
The late Ummulkhairi Aliyu died after a mob accused her of attempting to kidnap children. The attackers beat her to death before setting her body ablaze.
The incident attracted widespread condemnation across Nigeria. Religious leaders, civil society organisations, and human rights advocates demanded justice and stronger measures against mob violence.
Following the attack, the Kaduna State Police Command launched an intensive investigation. The command arrested dozens of suspects and assured residents that everyone linked to the crime would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
