The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned Nigerians about a fraudulent vehicle auction scheme operated by scammers impersonating its officials. The agency issued the alert to protect members of the public from financial fraud after criminals circulated fake letters and messages offering cheap forfeited vehicles. According to the NDLEA, the scam uses the name of its Secretary, Barrister Shadrach Haruna, and targets unsuspecting buyers across Nigeria through private communications and social media.
Scammers Impersonate NDLEA Officials
The NDLEA said fraudsters have continued to impersonate senior officials to deceive members of the public.
According to the agency, the criminals use fake private letters, text messages, and online platforms to advertise nonexistent auction sales.
Many of the fraudulent messages claim recipients can purchase forfeited vehicles at heavily discounted prices.
The agency stressed that these claims are false and intended only to steal money from unsuspecting victims.
NDLEA Clarifies Official Auction Process
The NDLEA explained that no official has the authority to privately sell or allocate forfeited vehicles or other seized assets.
Instead, the agency conducts all auctions through transparent public processes managed by government-approved auctioneers.
Furthermore, every legitimate auction receives wide publicity in national newspapers and through the agency’s official communication channels.
The agency noted that these procedures comply with legal requirements and public procurement regulations.
Public Urged to Ignore Fraudulent Offers
The NDLEA advised Nigerians to disregard any private messages claiming to offer auctioned vehicles on behalf of Barrister Shadrach Haruna or any other official.
In addition, the agency encouraged the public to remain vigilant and verify any auction information through official channels before making payments.
People should also avoid responding to suspicious calls, messages, or social media posts promoting discounted forfeited assets.
Report Suspected Scammers Immediately
The agency urged anyone who receives such fraudulent offers to report the incident without delay.
Reports can be made at the nearest NDLEA command or through the agency’s official communication channels.
The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and integrity in handling forfeited assets.
It also reminded Nigerians that public awareness remains one of the strongest tools against fraud.
