The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Monday launched a two-day anti-corruption workshop in Abuja to train electoral officers on integrity, transparency and accountability ahead of the 2027 General Election. The workshop, themed “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters,” aims to strengthen election management, prevent electoral malpractice and improve public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

INEC emphasises integrity in election management

Speaking at the opening ceremony at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, National Commissioner Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, who represented INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, described the training as timely because preparations for the 2027 General Election have started.

According to a statement issued by INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Etta-Messi, Agbamuche-Mbu said elections remain the foundation of democracy.

She stressed that INEC must continue to promote values that strengthen democratic institutions through credible and transparent elections.

The national commissioner urged participants to engage actively throughout the workshop. She encouraged them to ask relevant questions, share experiences and build professional networks that would improve future electoral assignments.

She also warned that compromised elections weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and ultimately affect governance and national development.

Furthermore, Agbamuche-Mbu praised ICPC for supporting the training. She described the workshop as a valuable initiative that would strengthen the capacity of electoral officials, promote best practices and provide practical guidance for election duties.

She thanked participants for prioritising the programme despite their demanding schedules.

Electoral officers praised for dedication

Agbamuche-Mbu also commended electoral officers for their commitment and sacrifices while serving the country.

She noted that many officials often risk their lives during election duties to ensure Nigerians exercise their democratic rights.

Expressing confidence in the workshop, she said the discussions and recommendations would strengthen the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in 2027.

ICPC warns against corruption in elections

ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Adamu (SAN), represented by the commission’s Director of Legal Services, Mr Henry Emore, described corruption as one of the greatest barriers to national development in the 21st century.

He said the workshop reflects ICPC’s commitment to supporting government efforts aimed at ensuring free, fair and transparent elections across Nigeria.

According to Emore, electoral malpractice increases the cost of governance because authorities must organise supplementary elections and maintain law and order.

He added that disputed election results also increase petitions, investigations and litigation, thereby placing additional pressure on anti-corruption agencies.

Collaboration to promote transparent elections

Emore described elections as defining moments for every nation. Therefore, he said INEC must uphold the highest standards of accountability, transparency and responsibility.

He explained that fighting corruption requires collective action. Consequently, ICPC partnered with INEC to organise the workshop and provide experienced resource persons for the training sessions.

The two-day programme brings together electoral officers and anti-corruption experts to strengthen transparency, accountability and integrity in Nigeria’s electoral process before the 2027 General Election.
