President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation from September 22 to 28, 2026, as world leaders gather to discuss global challenges and cooperation.
Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s UNGA Delegation
The delegation will include Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
It will also feature ministers and other senior government officials.
The 81st UNGA General Debate will take place in New York, United States.
This year’s session will focus on the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Shettima to Present Nigeria’s Position
At the General Debate, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement.
He will outline the country’s priorities on major global issues.
These issues include national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.
Furthermore, the Vice President will participate in several high-level meetings during UNGA week.
His engagements will cover the Right to Development, climate action and other strategic issues.
He will also address matters affecting Nigeria and the wider African continent.
Bilateral Meetings With Global Leaders
Shettima is expected to attend the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation.
He will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders from other countries.
In addition, he will meet representatives of international organisations and development partners.
These meetings will provide opportunities to strengthen Nigeria’s international partnerships.
They will also support the government’s economic diplomacy efforts.
Nigeria to Push Global Financial Reforms
Nigeria will use the UNGA engagements to advance key national interests.
The discussions will focus on reforming the global financial architecture.
They will also cover sustainable development and climate finance.
Moreover, Nigeria will seek stronger multilateral cooperation on issues affecting developing countries.
The engagements will provide a platform for Nigeria to strengthen its voice on global economic matters.
Shettima will return to Nigeria after completing his official engagements in New York.
