The Borno State Police Command has intercepted 55 sacks containing 60ml bottles of an illicit substance known as “Gumm” along the Baga Road-Bypass in Maiduguri. The operation took place on June 26, 2026, following credible intelligence. Police arrested a 51-year-old driver, Babagana Modu, who allegedly transported the consignment to Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area for cross-border smuggling.
Intelligence-Led Operation Yields Major Arrest
The Command’s X-Squad carried out the operation at about 7:11 p.m. while monitoring suspected drug trafficking activities.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, officers intercepted an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle during the operation.
A thorough search uncovered 55 sacks filled with numerous 60ml bottles of the illicit substance popularly called “Gumm.”
Suspect Confesses to Transporting the Consignment
Police identified the driver as Babagana Modu, 51.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted that someone hired him to deliver the consignment to its destination.
Investigators believe the illicit substances were destined for Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area before being smuggled across Nigeria’s international borders.
Police Intensify Manhunt for Other Suspects
ASP Daso said investigators have launched efforts to arrest other members of the trafficking network who remain at large.
He added that the case remains under active investigation. The Command will provide additional information as investigations progress.

The Borno State Police Command reaffirmed its determination to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state.
The Command also urged residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information. According to police, public cooperation remains vital in preventing crime and dismantling criminal networks.
