At the Southwark Crown Court in the United Kingdom, Diezani Alison-Madueke faces bribery charges as Igho Sanomi and Kevin Okyere deny claims that they funded her luxury lifestyle to influence oil contract awards, with their earlier statements to UK investigators read during ongoing hearings in 2026.
Businessmen Reject Bribery Claims
Sanomi and Okyere strongly denied paying bribes. UK investigators recorded their statements earlier, and the court reviewed them.
Prosecutors alleged that both men funded luxury shopping and expensive accommodation. However, the businessmen insisted that Alison-Madueke later reimbursed all expenses.
Kevin Okyere Explains London Payment
Okyere, founder of Springfield Group, described a 2014 shopping incident in London. He admitted paying £3,900 at Peter Jones store.
He explained that Alison-Madueke lacked funds at checkout. Later, she refunded him in cash in Abuja. Therefore, he rejected claims of bribery.
Igho Sanomi Defends Transactions
Sanomi also confirmed purchasing items for the former minister in London. However, he maintained that she reimbursed him afterward.
He stressed that his companies secured contracts through fair competition. In addition, he denied any improper influence in oil allocations.
Prosecution and Defence Clash
Prosecutors argued that Alison-Madueke received benefits from industry figures. They believe these benefits aimed to secure favorable treatment.
In contrast, her lawyer, Jonathan Laidlaw, argued she lacked direct control over oil contract awards.
Jonathan’s Statement Supports Defence
The court also reviewed a statement from Goodluck Jonathan. He said third-party payments during official trips were common.
He added that such support was usually recorded and reimbursed where necessary.
Case Background
Alison-Madueke served as petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015. Authorities charged her alongside Olatimbo Ayinde and Doye Agama.
The case involves five counts of alleged bribery. All defendants have pleaded not guilty, while proceedings continue.
