The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained officers accused of assaulting a civilian in Ohaukwu Local Government Area after the incident sparked widespread outrage on social media. The alleged assault happened in the early hours of Monday in Ohaukwu, Ebonyi State. On Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the development, stating that Commissioner of Police Hope Okafor ordered a full investigation while the victim receives treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA).
Officers Identified and Moved to State Headquarters
According to Ukandu, the officers linked to the alleged assault have been identified, detained and transferred to the Ebonyi State Police Command headquarters.
He explained that Commissioner Okafor directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The command assured residents that investigators would conduct the probe transparently, impartially and in line with due process.
Victim Receiving Treatment at FETHA
The police expressed sympathy for the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Furthermore, the command wished him a speedy recovery and promised to ensure justice through a fair investigation.
Ukandu stated that the officers involved would face appropriate disciplinary measures if the investigation established any wrongdoing.
Social Media Post Triggered Public Attention
The alleged assault gained public attention after photographs of the victim circulated widely on social media.
An X user, @martins_nwede, alleged that an officer identified as Kingsley Esheya, attached to the Ohaukwu Police Division, assaulted an unsuspecting civilian.
The post also accused unnamed individuals of attempting to shield the officer from accountability while urging the police authorities to take decisive action.
Police Reaffirm Zero Tolerance for Misconduct
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against police brutality and misconduct.
The command stressed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of the fundamental rights of every citizen.
It also assured the public that anyone found culpable after the investigation would face the appropriate disciplinary action.
