Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday harvested fresh vegetables from the State House garden in Abuja, urging Nigerians to embrace home gardening to improve food security, eat healthier meals, reduce household costs and support climate action. The harvest, carried out during her routine visit to the villa garden established about two years ago, forms part of her Every Home A Garden initiative designed to encourage families across the country to grow their own food.
Villa Garden Continues to Produce Abundant Harvests
The State House vegetable garden remains productive, demonstrating the success of the initiative launched to promote sustainable food production.
During the harvest, the First Lady showcased fresh spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin harvested from the garden. She described home gardening as an affordable and practical way for families to access nutritious vegetables throughout the year.
According to her, maintaining a home garden helps households cut food expenses while improving their overall health.
Home Gardening Supports Climate Action
Mrs Tinubu also stressed that home gardening offers environmental benefits beyond food production.
She explained that planting vegetables at home contributes to climate change mitigation by increasing green spaces and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.
The First Lady therefore encouraged more Nigerians to cultivate gardens in their homes and sustain the habit for long-term benefits.
First Lady Encourages Compassion Through Giving
After the harvest, Mrs Tinubu shared part of the fresh vegetables with members of her staff.
She urged Nigerians to show kindness and compassion by sharing what they have with others, adding that generosity strengthens communities and supports those in need.
The Every Home A Garden campaign continues to promote home gardening as a practical solution for enhancing food security, improving nutrition and encouraging environmental sustainability across Nigeria.
