Public primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will begin an indefinite strike on Monday, following a directive by the State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Abuja. The union announced the action after authorities failed to respond to its demands, despite a seven-day ultimatum and a 28-day grace period issued to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Teachers Declare Indefinite Strike in FCT
The union confirmed that all public school teachers must withdraw their services immediately. Consequently, schools across the FCT will remain closed until further notice.
Union leaders issued the directive after an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada. They urged members to comply fully and await further instructions.
Why Teachers Are Protesting
The union acknowledged that the government implemented the ₦70,000 minimum wage. It also confirmed the payment of nine months’ salary arrears.
However, several critical issues remain unresolved. As a result, tensions between teachers and authorities have escalated.
Key concerns include:
- Non-release of a ministerial committee report
- Delays in addressing outstanding entitlements
- Disputes over the 2024 promotion exercise
- The “vacancies” requirement for teacher promotions
Controversial Committee Report Still Withheld
The government established a committee on July 7, 2025, to resolve lingering issues. The committee submitted its report in August 2025.
However, authorities have not released the findings. Therefore, the union insists this delay triggered the strike.
Teachers are now demanding immediate publication and implementation of the report.
Union Criticises Government Silence
Union officials stated that authorities ignored both the ultimatum and the extended grace period. Consequently, they had no option but to act.
They emphasized that the strike will continue until all demands are met.
Parents Advised to Keep Children at Home
The union advised parents to keep their children at home during the strike. This measure aims to ensure student safety and avoid disruptions.
Meanwhile, education activities across public schools will remain suspended indefinitely.
What Happens Next?
The strike could disrupt academic calendars if it continues. Therefore, stakeholders expect urgent intervention from FCT authorities.
For now, teachers remain firm in their decision. They insist that only concrete action—not promises—will end the strike.
