By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested five suspected members of a robbery and abduction syndicate linked to multiple “one-chance” operations across major highways in the state. The suspects were arrested during coordinated operations across Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, Jega, Maiyama, and Aliero Local Government Areas. Police said the gang allegedly posed as commercial drivers to rob passengers, withdraw money from victims’ accounts, and demand ransom. The operation was announced by the command’s spokesperson, Bashir Usman, as part of ongoing efforts to curb highway crimes in Kebbi.

Police Arrest Suspected Highway Robbery Syndicate

According to the police, the arrested suspects are Abubakar Muhammad from Bancho village in Tambuwal, Shehu Ango, Shamsu Daudu, Shuaibu Umar, and Aisha Usmanu.

The command stated that officers carried out intelligence-led and coordinated operations that led to the arrests across several local government areas.

Investigators believe the suspects belong to a syndicate involved in repeated “one-chance” robberies and abductions targeting commuters.

How the Suspects Allegedly Operated

Police investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly disguised themselves as commercial transport operators. They reportedly lured unsuspecting passengers into vehicles before robbing them at knifepoint.

After carrying out the attacks, the gang allegedly abandoned victims in isolated locations.

In one reported case, investigators said the suspects withdrew more than ₦1 million from a victim’s bank account. They also allegedly demanded ransom from the victim’s relatives before releasing the victim.

Police Link Group to Additional Robbery Cases

The command also connected the suspects to another incident reported on April 30, 2026, along Tashar Hauwa on the Jega–Kalgo Road.

According to police findings, the syndicate allegedly robbed a female passenger, Shamsiyya Samaila, of her Infinix Android phone, power bank, charger, and Opay ATM card.

Investigators further stated that the suspects later withdrew ₦9,000 from the bank account connected to the stolen ATM card.

Police said ongoing investigations have linked the group to several other robbery and abduction incidents across highways in Kebbi State. Authorities are also working to arrest other fleeing members of the network.

Police Urge Travellers to Stay Alert

The Commissioner of Police advised travellers to avoid boarding suspicious vehicles along highways.

Instead, commuters were encouraged to use designated motor parks and recognised transport terminals.

The command also reassured residents of its commitment to tackling criminal activities and urged the public to support security agencies with credible information.
