The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has launched investigations into some tour operators accused of smuggling extra pilgrims into Saudi Arabia during the 2026 Hajj exercise. NAHCON Chairman, Ismail Abba Yusuf, ordered the probe in Saudi Arabia after reports emerged that some operators exceeded their approved pilgrim allocations and exploited Nigerian pilgrims.
NAHCON Orders Full Investigation
NAHCON disclosed that the affected operators allegedly transported additional pilgrims outside approved quotas. The Commission also accused some operators of exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims under their supervision.
Consequently, Chairman Ismail Abba Yusuf directed the Commission’s Central Security Committee to identify all operators involved. He also ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged violations.
NAHCON stressed that all Hajj stakeholders must obey operational guidelines and approved standards. According to the Commission, strict compliance remains necessary for a smooth pilgrimage.
Operators Risk Sanctions
The Commission warned that any operator found guilty would face serious sanctions. These penalties may include the withdrawal of operating licences.
Furthermore, NAHCON explained that the investigation aims to protect Nigerian pilgrims and strengthen compliance with Hajj regulations in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Saudi authorities have intensified monitoring of pilgrim movement, accommodation and welfare during the peak Hajj period.
NAHCON Begins Refund Process Over Rejected Meals
NAHCON also confirmed that arrangements had started for refunds to pilgrims affected by recent meal issues.
The Commission stated that some dinner meals served on May 27 failed to meet Saudi-approved handling and packaging standards. Therefore, Saudi health authorities and NAHCON immediately withdrew the meals.
According to the Commission, the swift action prevented possible health complications among Nigerian pilgrims.
In addition, NAHCON provided alternative light refreshments to affected pilgrims pending further arrangements.
Commission Reaffirms Commitment To Pilgrim Welfare
NAHCON assured Nigerian pilgrims of its commitment to their welfare, safety and comfort throughout the 2026 Hajj exercise.
The Commission added that it would continue enforcing operational standards to ensure a hitch-free pilgrimage for all Nigerians in the holy land.
