NSCDC to Sanction Unlicensed Private Guard Companies Operating in FCT

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned that it will sanction Private Guard Companies (PGCs) operating with fake documents, expired licences, or without valid authorisation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu issued the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. He said the crackdown will begin after the ongoing compliance exercise. According to him, the enforcement aims to ensure all private security firms comply with the law and improve public safety.

NSCDC Nears End of Compliance Exercise

Odumosu said the command has maintained a cordial and productive relationship with licensed private guard companies across the FCT.

He explained that the ongoing compliance exercise allows operators to regularise their licences before enforcement begins.

“Once the exercise is concluded, we will move into full enforcement,” he said.

He urged any company yet to renew its licence or obtain proper authorisation to do so immediately.

Illegal Operators Face Sanctions

The commandant stressed that no private guard company is allowed to operate with fake documents or expired licences.

He revealed that the command has already identified several companies suspected of violating the law.

“We have been conducting enforcement operations across the territory and are currently compiling the names of companies that have violated the law,” he said.

According to him, firms found operating illegally will face sanctions, including the sealing of their offices where necessary.

He added that surveillance operations are ongoing across different parts of the FCT to identify non-compliant companies.

Private Security Firms Support Crime Prevention

Odumosu said the NSCDC values its partnership with licensed private security companies beyond regulating and training their personnel.

He noted that private guards often serve as the first line of information because they work closely with communities.

“As a result, they provide us with credible intelligence, especially regarding areas where vandalism and other criminal activities may occur,” he said.

He added that the corps responds quickly whenever it receives such intelligence to prevent crimes and protect lives and property.

NSCDC Urges Compliance

Odumosu reminded all private guard companies that they have already been informed about the legal requirements guiding their operations.

He warned that any firm operating without a valid licence should expect enforcement action soon.

“Those found operating illegally will face the appropriate sanctions, including the sealing of their offices where necessary,” he said.
