LEIRIA, Portugal — Portugal defeated Nigeria 2-1 on Thursday night at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Portugal. Francisco Conceição scored the winning goal in the second half to hand Roberto Martínez’s side victory in their final FIFA World Cup warm-up match. The encounter featured Cristiano Ronaldo, Akor Adams, and several Premier League stars. Portugal secured the result through clinical finishing, while Nigeria matched the European giants for long periods before falling narrowly short.

Portugal Start Strong but Ronaldo Misses Early Chances

Portugal began the match at a high tempo. Cristiano Ronaldo fired wide from long range within two minutes.

Nigeria responded through Calvin Bassey, whose effort from outside the box forced Diogo Costa into his first save.

Ronaldo then missed a clear opportunity after breaking through on goal. However, Portugal maintained pressure and eventually found the breakthrough.

Pedro Neto Opens the Scoring

Portugal took the lead midway through the first half.

Diogo Dalot delivered a precise cut-back to Pedro Neto. The winger controlled the ball before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

The goal ended Neto’s four-month scoring drought and rewarded Portugal’s attacking dominance.

Shortly afterward, Bruno Fernandes almost doubled the advantage. Maduka Okoye produced a brilliant save to tip his powerful half-volley over the crossbar.

Fernandes continued to create chances. He later found Ronaldo from a corner, but the veteran forward headed narrowly over the bar.

Okoye Keeps Nigeria in the Contest

Nigeria relied on Okoye’s sharp reflexes to stay within reach.

The goalkeeper denied Francisco Trincão with another impressive stop before the Super Eagles launched a dangerous counterattack.

Akor Adams completed a neat one-two with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and calmly slotted home with his left foot to level the score.

The equalizer rewarded Nigeria’s resilience and ensured the teams entered halftime tied.

Conceição Delivers Decisive Moment

Martínez made nine substitutions during the break to freshen his squad.

Among the changes was João Félix, whose effort struck the underside of the crossbar moments after entering the pitch. Replays suggested the ball may have crossed the line, but officials allowed play to continue.

As the second half progressed, Portugal regained control.

João Cancelo supplied Francisco Conceição, who showcased excellent skill by beating his marker, cutting inside, and curling a precise finish into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

The goal restored Portugal’s lead and ultimately secured victory.

Nigeria Show Promise Despite Defeat

Nigeria’s six-match unbeaten run ended with the defeat. Nevertheless, the Super Eagles produced an encouraging display against one of the world’s highest-ranked teams.

Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi both threatened, while Okoye delivered several important saves throughout the match.

Portugal have now won nine of their last ten home matches and extended their unbeaten run to five games.

However, Martínez’s men will need similar performances away from home when they open their FIFA World Cup campaign against DR Congo, the side that denied Nigeria a place at the tournament.
