ABUJA, Nigeria — National leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, on Wednesday defended his party’s role in the 2027 elections during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. He stated that the NDC is providing candidates, including presidential candidate Peter Obi, with a platform to contest, stressing that no individual is doing the party a favour.
Dickson said the NDC’s growth and relevance do not depend on any single politician. He argued that the party had already established a national presence before the arrival of prominent political figures.
According to him, politicians and supporters from different parts of the country joined the NDC long before Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso became members.
No Crisis Between NDC Leadership and Peter Obi
Addressing reports of internal disagreements, Dickson dismissed claims of a crisis within the opposition party.
He insisted that the relationship between the party leadership and Obi remains strong.
“Peter Obi is a cherished member of our party,” Dickson said.
He added that the NDC demonstrated confidence in Obi by making him its sole presidential candidate.
“We are working well together. There’s no crisis,” he stated.
Furthermore, Dickson said the party selected both its presidential and vice-presidential candidates without controversy or internal conflict.
Party Platform Supports Candidates
The former Bayelsa State governor maintained that political parties provide opportunities for candidates, not the other way around.
“Don’t make it look like anyone is doing NDC a favour. No one is,” he said.
“Rather, the NDC and I and my colleagues are doing people a favour by granting our platform.”
Dickson noted that Obi secured the presidential ticket without paying any nomination fee.
According to him, this decision reflects the party’s commitment to fairness and inclusion.
Dickson Defends His Presidential Credentials
The senator also rejected suggestions that he lacks the qualifications to seek the presidency.
He stated that he possesses the experience and credentials needed to contest Nigeria’s highest office.
“I could have run. There’s no one more qualified than me to run for presidential candidate,” Dickson said.
His comments came amid discussions about leadership roles within the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Warning to Supporters Against Attacking the Party
Dickson urged Obi’s supporters to avoid attacking the NDC or its leaders.
He warned that such actions could weaken the political platform supporting their preferred candidate.
“If you are genuinely supporting Peter Obi and you are disparaging me, the leader, or the platform itself, that is nonsensical,” he said.
He stressed that party unity remains critical to achieving success in the 2027 elections.
NDC Focused on 2027 Electoral Success
Dickson concluded by emphasizing the need for unity and respect within the party.
He said preserving the NDC’s structure and leadership will strengthen its chances in the next general election.
The NDC leader maintained that the party remains united and committed to building a strong opposition capable of competing effectively in 2027.
