President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 11 in Nigeria praised Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a Yoruba elder statesman and Afenifere leader, as he marked his 100th birthday in Akure, Ondo State. The tribute celebrated Fasoranti’s century-long life of service, leadership, and education. Tinubu highlighted his contributions to democracy, governance, and Yoruba unity. He also noted Fasoranti’s influence in politics and education while praying for continued good health and longevity.
A Century of Purposeful Leadership
Pa Reuben Fasoranti stands as a symbol of discipline, integrity, and public service. Over the years, he built a reputation rooted in principle and consistency. His life reflects strong values and unwavering dedication to national development.
Strong Academic and Educational Foundations
Fasoranti valued education as a tool for transformation. He earned a degree in English and Geography from the University College Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan.
He further obtained a postgraduate diploma in Education from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. In addition, he earned a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
He worked as a teacher at Ondo Boys’ High School and other institutions in Ondo State. Furthermore, he founded several schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School. He also established St. Frances’ Academy in memory of his late wife.
Political Journey and Public Service
Fasoranti played active roles in Nigeria’s political evolution. He aligned with the Action Group during the First Republic. He later joined the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
Between 1979 and 1983, he served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under Governor Adekunle Ajasin. He managed state finances with discipline and accountability.
Afenifere Leadership and Yoruba Advocacy
Fasoranti became a key voice in Yoruba politics and identity. He strongly supported the ideology of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He promoted the Omoluabi ethos, which emphasizes integrity and moral conduct.
After internal divisions within Afenifere, he emerged as the recognized leader of the group. He consistently advocated Yoruba unity, development, and political relevance.
Resistance, Democracy, and National Struggle
During military rule, Fasoranti stood firmly against dictatorship. He joined pro-democracy movements that demanded civilian governance. His voice strengthened resistance during Nigeria’s military era.
He also survived an assassination attempt during the Abacha regime. However, he remained committed to democratic ideals and national freedom.
Personal Losses and Enduring Strength
Fasoranti faced several personal tragedies. He lost his wife in 1991, a major emotional blow. In 2019, kidnappers killed his daughter, Funke Olakunrin.
Despite these challenges, he remained resilient. His life continues to reflect courage, patience, and endurance.
Tinubu’s Personal Tribute and Gratitude
President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation for Fasoranti’s support. He recalled visiting him during his presidential campaign in Akure.
Fasoranti reportedly prayed for Tinubu’s victory and leadership success. Tinubu said the prayers came to fruition after his electoral win.
He also thanked Fasoranti for supporting his Renewed Hope agenda. Furthermore, he praised the elder statesman for his national service and moral guidance.
