President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International FC for winning the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after the Enugu-based club defeated Ikorodu City FC 2-1 on Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. The President praised the players, management and supporters for securing a record-equalling ninth league crown and also applauded Rivers United for their strong title challenge throughout the season.
Rangers Clinch Historic NPFL Crown
Rangers International FC delivered when it mattered most and secured the league title with a dramatic final-day victory over Ikorodu City FC.
The result lifted Rangers to 68 points from 38 matches and confirmed their status as champions of the 2025/2026 NPFL season.
The triumph also placed Rangers level with Enyimba FC as the joint most successful clubs in Nigerian top-flight history with nine league titles.
The final-day encounter attracted national attention because both teams entered the match with major objectives still on the line. Rangers remained composed and converted their chances to seal another memorable chapter in the club’s history.
Tinubu Celebrates Rangers’ Achievement
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the title success as a reminder of Rangers’ historic dominance in Nigerian and African football.
He recalled the club’s achievements during the 1970s and 1980s when Rangers emerged as one of Africa’s strongest teams.
According to the President, the club won multiple domestic trophies, reached the final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1975 and later lifted the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.
Tinubu said:
“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement.”
President Commends Sports Investment in Enugu
The President also congratulated Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and linked Rangers’ success to continued investment in youth development and sports infrastructure.
Tinubu said the victory reflects the benefits of sustained support for grassroots football and talent development.
He stated:
“I must also congratulate Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on the victory of Rangers International FC. This victory is an obvious fruit of his administration’s investments in youth and sports in the state.”
Rivers United Earn Recognition Despite Missing Title
President Tinubu also recognised Rivers United for pushing the title race to the final day.
Although Rivers United defeated Katsina United 3-0, the result was not enough to overtake Rangers at the top of the table.
The President praised the club’s consistency, competitiveness and sportsmanship during the campaign.
He wished both Rangers International FC and Rivers United success as they prepare to represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Dramatic End to the NPFL Season
The season ended with celebrations for Rangers and disappointment for several clubs.
Defending champions Remo Stars FC suffered relegation after finishing 17th.
Elkanami Warriors, Bayelsa United FC and Wikki Tourists FC also dropped out of the top division after ending the campaign in 18th, 19th and 20th positions respectively.
