United Bank for Africa (UBA) has denied false reports claiming its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, divorced his wife, stating that the allegations surfaced recently across social media platforms, were designed to mislead the public and damage reputations, and have now prompted the bank to issue a takedown directive and involve law enforcement authorities.
UBA Describes Claims as Fabricated and Malicious
UBA described the viral reports as entirely fabricated, reckless, and defamatory. The bank stressed that the publication formed part of a coordinated campaign of misinformation.
Moreover, it noted that the false claims aimed to mislead the public while causing reputational harm to both the businessman and the institution.
Immediate Takedown Directive Issued
The bank ordered all parties involved to remove the publication immediately from their platforms. It also warned against further dissemination of similar content.
In addition, UBA instructed those connected to the publication to preserve all relevant records. These include digital footprints, communications, and metadata.
The bank emphasized that such records may be required for legal proceedings.
Arrests Made as Investigation Begins
UBA confirmed that law enforcement agencies have begun investigations into the matter. As a result, authorities have already arrested three individuals allegedly linked to the publication.
Those identified include Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
Meanwhile, investigations continue, and more arrests may follow.
Warning to Media and Digital Platforms
UBA issued a strong warning to media organisations, individuals, and digital platforms. It urged them to stop sharing or reposting the false content.
The bank added that anyone who continues to circulate the publication risks legal consequences.
Alero Ladipo, Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, reiterated that the reports were deliberately designed to mislead the public.
Bank Reaffirms Commitment to Reputation Protection
UBA stated that it will pursue all legal avenues to protect its reputation and leadership. It also urged the public to verify information before sharing it online.
