The Kano State Government has approved ₦99 million for a dog rabies vaccination programme in Kano. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf granted the approval on February 21, 2026, in Kano State. The Ministry of Livestock Development will coordinate the programme. Officials plan to vaccinate at least 10,000 dogs to prevent rabies and protect residents.
Funding Targets 10,000 Dogs in First Phase
The government will use the ₦99 million fund for the first phase of the vaccination exercise.
According to Halima Gadanya, Director of Public Enlightenment, the initiative strengthens public health protection. She explained that the programme also supports livestock development across the state.
Furthermore, officials aim to reduce the risk of rabies transmission in both rural and urban communities.
Statewide Dog Census to Strengthen Control
As part of the strategy, the ministry will conduct a statewide dog census. This exercise will provide reliable data for planning and monitoring.
In addition, the census will support long-term rabies control efforts. Authorities believe accurate data will improve vaccination coverage and disease tracking.
Ministry Leads Implementation
The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development will coordinate the programme. Commissioner Aliyu Isah Aliyu will supervise its implementation.
Aliyu described the initiative as a critical public health intervention. He said the ministry will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure smooth execution.
Moreover, he urged residents to present their dogs for vaccination. He also called for community support to curb the spread of rabies.
Why Rabies Vaccination Matters
Rabies is a viral disease transmitted mainly through dog bites. It affects both animals and humans.
Health experts warn that once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Therefore, mass vaccination remains the most effective prevention method.
The Kano dog rabies vaccination programme reflects the government’s commitment to public health protection. It also promotes livestock sector growth and improves safety across Kano State.
