The African Union has condemned the killing of over 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children during coordinated attacks carried out by bandits in Zamfara State, Northwestern Nigeria, on February 21, 2026, as confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who described the incident as heinous and extended solidarity to Nigeria.

African Union Condemns Zamfara Killings

In the statement published on its official website, Youssouf strongly denounced the attacks. He described the violence as a grave violation of human rights.

Furthermore, he said the AU rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism targeting civilians. He stressed that such attacks threaten peace, security, and stability across Africa.

Youssouf expressed full solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. In addition, he wished the injured a swift recovery.

He reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity and restore lasting peace.

Call for Immediate Release of Abducted Victims

The AU Chairperson called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children.

Moreover, he urged strengthened and coordinated action to protect civilian populations. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent a recurrence of such atrocities.

According to the AU, these actions align with its commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability across the continent.

How the Zamfara Attack Happened

The attack occurred last Thursday night in Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Residents said armed bandits stormed the community with sophisticated weapons. They blocked all access roads to prevent escape.

A resident explained that the attackers began shooting indiscriminately after sealing the roads. Consequently, villagers ran in different directions for safety.

Initially, the community confirmed about 30 deaths. However, later reports put the number of casualties at over 50. Several people sustained injuries, while many others remain missing.

The raid lasted until the early hours of Friday. Afterward, residents buried the victims in a mass burial. A video showed corpses wrapped in white cloth before interment.

Growing Security Concerns in Northwestern Nigeria

Zamfara State has faced repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years. Therefore, security concerns continue to rise across Northwestern Nigeria.

The AU’s condemnation adds international pressure for decisive action. Meanwhile, residents continue to demand stronger protection and lasting security reforms.
