Flow with Confidence Sanitary Pads Initiative Launched in Abia

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Flow with Confidence sanitary pads initiative was launched in Abia State to support 370,000 rural schoolgirls across Nigeria with a one-year supply of sanitary pads. The programme, spearheaded by Oluremi Tinubu, aims to combat menstrual poverty, improve school attendance, and promote reproductive health. The event brought together state officials, health experts, and education stakeholders to strengthen collaboration for the dignity, health, and academic advancement of the Nigerian girl child.

Tackling Menstrual Poverty in Rural Communities

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, described the initiative as transformative. She explained that many girls struggle silently during menstruation due to lack of sanitary products. As a result, their school attendance and self-esteem suffer.

She assured that the ministry will partner with key stakeholders. Together, they will ensure proper distribution and sustained menstrual hygiene advocacy across communities.

Furthermore, the programme prioritises girls in rural areas who cannot afford sanitary pads. Each state will receive 10,000 packs under the nationwide distribution plan.

Public Health Benefits of Proper Menstrual Hygiene

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya-Uche, emphasised the health impact of the programme. He stated that proper menstrual hygiene management prevents infections and protects reproductive health.

He pledged the Ministry of Health’s support through continuous health education and community sensitisation. In addition, the ministry will introduce monitoring systems to sustain the programme’s success.

Dr. Theodora Ngozika Igboaruka also delivered a lecture at the event. She highlighted the role of parents, teachers, and health workers in creating safe environments for adolescent girls. According to her, open conversations encourage confidence and healthy practices.

One-Year Supply for 370,000 Schoolgirls Nationwide

Under the initiative, 370,000 schoolgirls in rural communities will receive a one-year supply of disposable sanitary pads. Organisers chose disposable pads because they offer safer hygiene protection for reproductive wellbeing.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinenye Nwaka, expressed appreciation for the programme. She described the launch in Abia as a proud moment for the state.

Moreover, Joy Okechukwu educated students on maintaining proper hygiene during menstruation. She encouraged openness and informed discussions about menstrual health.

Encouraging Confidence and Academic Excellence

During the distribution of the Flow with Confidence sanitary pads, Mrs. Otti urged students to remain confident. She encouraged them to focus on their education and support one another.

She stressed that menstruation should never cause shame or stigma. Instead, girls should pursue their dreams boldly and take advantage of the opportunity provided.

Strengthening Partnerships for the Nigerian Girl Child

The event marked a major step in collaborative efforts to protect the dignity and health of Nigerian girls. Through strategic partnerships, the initiative seeks to reduce school absenteeism and promote gender equality in education.

Ultimately, the Flow with Confidence sanitary pads initiative reinforces a shared commitment to empowering the girl child and ending menstrual poverty in Nigeria.
