Adamu Atiku Resigns as Adamawa Commissioner Amid Political Realignments

By Elizabeth Ugbo

YOLA, Adamawa State — Adamu Atiku Abubakar resigned on March 2, 2026, as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, citing plans for broader political engagement, while thanking Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and the people of the state for their support.

The first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced his resignation in a statement issued Monday through his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro.

He said the decision marks a new phase of service, not a withdrawal from public life.

Gratitude to Governor Fintiri and Adamawa People

Adamu thanked Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for the opportunity to serve in a strategic role.

He described his tenure as impactful and rewarding.

“I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me,” he stated.

He also expressed appreciation to the people of Adamawa State, especially his Jada community, for their prayers and encouragement.

According to him, their support strengthened his commitment throughout his service.

Appreciation to Atiku Abubakar and Family

In a post on his X handle, Adamu extended gratitude to his parents.

He specifically thanked his father, Atiku Abubakar, and his mother, Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar, for their guidance and prayers.

He noted that their moral support sustained him during his time in office.

Political Context and Defection Drama

Last Friday, Governor Fintiri defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adamu did not attend the event at the Adamawa Government House.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar reacted through his media office.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC would face challenges convincing Nigerians in 2027.

However, he stressed that every politician has the right to choose their path.

“Anyone, including my son, who chooses to stand with Nigerians rather than the APC stands on patriotism,” he said.

Governorship and Senate Ambitions

Sources close to the former vice president revealed that Adamu may contest for governor under a yet-to-be-declared party.

Reports also indicate that Atiku has endorsed him for a senatorial race.

In addition, his half-brother, Abba Atiku, plans to contest for the House of Representatives under the APC platform.

A New Political Phase

Adamu Atiku insists his resignation does not end his service to Adamawa State.

Instead, he says it opens new opportunities for developmental collaboration.

He reaffirmed his readiness to contribute to the unity, growth, and progress of the state.

His next political move may reshape Adamawa’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
