By Elizabeth Ugbo

Four passengers died and four others sustained severe injuries on Saturday after a truck collided with a commercial mini bus along the Lekki–Epe Expressway opposite Beechwood, Shapati, inward Ajah in Lagos. The crash occurred when the truck driver reportedly lost control and rammed into the oncoming “Korope” bus carrying passengers. Officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force responded quickly, rescued trapped victims, and evacuated the dead.

How the Lekki–Epe Expressway Crash Happened

According to LASTMA, the accident involved a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial mini bus known locally as “Korope.”

Preliminary findings show that the articulated truck driver lost control while moving along the busy expressway. As a result, the vehicle veered across the carriageway.

Moments later, it rammed into the oncoming commercial bus carrying several passengers.

The violent impact crushed parts of the bus and trapped some occupants inside the wreckage.

Casualties and Rescue Operation

The collision caused the immediate death of four male passengers.

Meanwhile, four other occupants — two men and two women — sustained severe fractures during the crash.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority arrived quickly and began rescue efforts. Emergency responders and passersby also assisted in freeing trapped victims.

Afterward, rescuers rushed the injured passengers to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.

At the same time, an ambulance belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps evacuated the bodies to a morgue.

Police Secure Scene, Begin Investigation

Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Elemoro Police Division secured the accident scene.

They controlled traffic and protected emergency workers during the rescue operation.

Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

However, reports indicate that the truck driver and his assistant fled immediately after the accident.

LASTMA Urges Drivers to Prioritise Road Safety

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki praised the swift response of emergency teams.

He noted that their prompt collaboration helped rescue trapped passengers quickly.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists, especially articulated truck drivers, to drive responsibly.

According to him, strict adherence to traffic regulations will help prevent avoidable accidents on Lagos roads.
