Gunmen attacked a church in Kwara State on Sunday, abducting eight worshippers during a service at ECWA Church Omugo in Ifelodun LGA. The attackers stormed the church, fired gunshots, and whisked victims away. Security forces later rescued three victims, while five remain in captivity.
Attack Disrupts Sunday Worship
The assailants invaded the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) during service. They fired sporadically to disperse the congregation.
Witnesses reported panic as worshippers fled for safety. Some attackers also stole personal belongings during the chaos.
A viral video showed the frightening moment. Children screamed outside while armed men chased fleeing members.
Security Forces Launch Swift Rescue Operation
Security operatives responded quickly after the incident. The joint team included police, military personnel, and local forest guards.
According to police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, three victims regained freedom due to the rapid intervention. However, five victims remain with the abductors.
She confirmed that security forces continue search operations to rescue the remaining victims.
Government Orders Manhunt for Suspects
The Kwara State Government condemned the attack strongly. It described the assault on a religious center as cowardly and unacceptable.
Commissioner for Communications Bolanle Olukoju praised the swift response of security agencies. She also urged them to intensify efforts to capture the attackers.
Furthermore, the government called on vigilantes and residents to support ongoing operations.
Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Security
President Bola Tinubu previously reassured Nigerians of improved security efforts.
He referenced a similar incident in Eruku, where 38 abducted worshippers were successfully rescued.
The president emphasized continued collaboration between security forces and communities to protect lives and property.
Ongoing Efforts to Rescue Remaining Victims
Security operatives have intensified forest combing operations in affected areas. Authorities say these actions have already reduced criminal activities.
Meanwhile, officials remain optimistic about rescuing the remaining five victims.
They also vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
