Apprentice Arraigned for Alleged Murder of Employer in Onitsha

An apprentice, Chiemerie Anieke, and an accomplice, Godwin Nnabuike Nwokporo, were arraigned on March 18, 2026, before a High Court in Onitsha by the Anambra State Police Command for the alleged murder of trader Ikechukwu Nwite and theft of over ₦8 million. The incident occurred in February at Fegge, following a dispute over theft and drug use.


Incident Details

According to police, the altercation started between the apprentice and his employer. The disagreement reportedly involved accusations of theft and drug use.

During the confrontation, Anieke allegedly struck Nwite on the head with a pestle. As a result, the victim died from the injuries.

Furthermore, police linked the suspect to another attack on Ogechukwu Nwite in the same area.


Financial Crime and Evidence

Investigators revealed that the suspects transferred over ₦8 million from the deceased’s account. Nwokporo allegedly provided the bank account used for the transaction.

Meanwhile, operatives recovered ₦6 million from the suspects. Authorities have submitted the money as evidence in court.


Police Statement and Arrest

The police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement. He stated that operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department handled the case.

The deceased was a trader at the popular Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Market. The market is known as a major commercial hub in the city.


Court Proceedings

The court remanded both suspects in a correctional facility pending further proceedings. Authorities confirmed that prosecution will continue as investigations progress.
