Police Arrest Over 200 at London Vigil Against Palestine Action Ban

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Police arrested more than 200 protesters on Saturday in Trafalgar Square, London, during a mass vigil organised by Defend Our Juries to oppose the UK government’s ban on Palestine Action, as demonstrators challenged restrictions on free speech and demanded the lifting of the proscription.

Mass Arrests at Central London Protest

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of 212 people. Authorities accused them of showing support for a proscribed organisation.

Officers said those detained were between 27 and 82 years old. Police physically removed several demonstrators from the scene. An elderly woman with walking sticks was also escorted away.

Organisers estimated that about 1,500 people attended the vigil in Trafalgar Square.

Background to the Palestine Action Ban

The UK government banned Palestine Action in July 2025. Officials labelled it a terrorist organisation. This classification placed it alongside groups like al-Qaeda and Hezbollah.

The ban makes it illegal to join or support the group. Violators face up to 14 years in prison.

Palestine Action describes itself as a direct action network. It aims to end British support for Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The group has claimed responsibility for actions, including property damage at an RAF base and a London business.

Court Ruling and Police U-Turn

On February 13, the High Court of England and Wales ruled the ban unlawful. Judges described it as disproportionate and a breach of free expression.

Initially, the Metropolitan Police indicated they would avoid arresting supporters. However, on March 25, authorities reversed that stance and resumed arrests.

Critics argue this decision contradicts the court ruling and undermines civil liberties.

Protesters and Activists Speak Out

One activist, Qesser Zuhrah, criticised the police response. She claimed officers act in line with government interests rather than public protection.

Another demonstrator said he joined the vigil to defend democracy. He warned that restrictions on protest threaten free speech in Britain.

Eight activists linked to the group also staged hunger strikes while in custody. They protested the government’s proscription decision.

Organisers Demand Policy Reversal

Defend Our Juries organised the demonstration. The group called on authorities to lift the ban on Palestine Action.

It also demanded that officials drop charges against those arrested under terrorism laws.

Organisers said the protest highlighted growing concerns about policing and civil rights.

Appeal Hearing Scheduled

The UK government has appealed the High Court ruling. The Court of Appeal will hear the case on April 28 and 29.

The outcome could determine the future of the ban and ongoing prosecutions.
