Israeli Attacks Continue in Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire Extension

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Israeli forces have continued attacks in southern Lebanon, killing at least four people in Nabatieh District on Saturday. The strikes happened despite a three-week ceasefire extension announced by Donald Trump. The violence involves Israel and Hezbollah, raising doubts about the truce’s effectiveness.

Ceasefire Fails to Stop Hostilities

Analysts say the ceasefire has not reduced fighting. Instead, clashes and air raids have continued across southern Lebanon.

Ali Rizk, a Beirut-based security analyst, told Al Jazeera that the agreement only involved the Lebanese and Israeli states. However, Hezbollah lawmakers have openly rejected it.

As a result, the truce lacks full commitment from all parties. Consequently, violence has persisted.

Scepticism Over US-Led Process

Rizk also questioned the role of Washington in the negotiations. He argued that many in Lebanon view the process with suspicion.

According to him, the initiative targets Hezbollah rather than promoting genuine peace. Therefore, trust in the ceasefire remains low.

He further claimed the agreement lacked substance from the beginning. In his view, it mainly created room for negotiations aimed at weakening Hezbollah.

Hezbollah Rejects Ceasefire Terms

Ali Fayyad described the ceasefire as meaningless due to continued Israeli actions. He cited assassinations, shelling, and gunfire as ongoing violations.

Moreover, he insisted Hezbollah retains the right to respond. This stance increases the risk of further escalation.

Israel Maintains Military Operations

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operations. He stated that Israel would maintain full freedom of action against threats.

He also accused Hezbollah of attempting to undermine the ceasefire.

However, reports from southern Lebanon suggest Israeli forces have intensified activity instead.

Fresh Attacks Reported Across Southern Lebanon

Israeli troops reportedly destroyed buildings in Bint Jbeil. At the same time, air raids hit residential areas in Khiam.

Journalists on the ground described continuous explosions across the region. These developments indicate ongoing military operations despite the truce.

Rising Casualties and Expanding Conflict

Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported 2,496 deaths and 7,719 injuries since March 2.

Additionally, two Israeli strikes in Yohmor al-Shaqif killed four people. The attacks targeted a truck and a motorcycle.

Reports also confirmed strikes north of the Litani River, an area Israel has declared part of its operational zone.

Situation Remains Volatile

Overall, the continued attacks highlight the fragility of the ceasefire. While diplomatic efforts continue, violence on the ground shows no clear sign of stopping.
