Activist and Omoyele Sowore declined an opposition summit in Ibadan on Sunday, stating that the gathering failed to offer a credible alternative for Nigerians. He criticised the event, held at the Oyo State Government House, for recycling old political actors. Sowore argued that Nigeria needs a complete political reset, not a coalition of familiar faces.
Sowore Dismisses Summit as “Recycled Politics”
Sowore explained his decision in a post on X. He said the summit lacked substance and direction. According to him, many attendees contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges.
He stated that Nigerians deserve fresh leadership built on accountability and integrity. He added that the same political figures cannot suddenly become agents of change.
Criticism of Major Political Parties
Furthermore, Sowore criticised dominant parties, including the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress.
He argued that these parties represent the same political culture. Therefore, he rejected any alliance involving them. He stressed that Nigeria does not need a reshuffling of failed systems.
AAC Rejects Participation in Opposition Coalition
Sowore also confirmed that the African Action Congress will not join the coalition. He described the proposed alliance as deceptive and lacking genuine reform goals.
He insisted that his party remains committed to building a people-driven movement. According to him, the focus is on transparency, accountability, and real transformation.
Key Political Figures Attend Ibadan Summit
Meanwhile, the summit attracted several prominent leaders. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo chaired the meeting. Seyi Makinde hosted the event.
Other attendees included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Summit Aims to Strengthen Opposition Unity
Organisers said the summit focused on building a united opposition. The theme emphasised collaboration to sustain democracy.
They aimed to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. Additionally, discussions explored strategies for future elections.
Sowore Calls for Complete Political Reset
However, Sowore maintained a firm stance. He said Nigeria needs a complete break from past leadership failures.
He concluded that only a credible, people-focused movement can drive meaningful change.
