Nigerian striker Victor Boniface returned to Werder Bremen’s matchday squad on Sunday in their 1–1 draw against Stuttgart after recovering from knee surgery, as the Bundesliga side pushes to secure top-flight safety.
Rolfes Explains Loan Decision
Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes explained that the club approved Boniface’s loan move to help him regain full fitness after an injury-disrupted season.
He maintained that Boniface’s quality remains unquestioned. However, he linked the striker’s struggles to the physical demands of elite football and a congested schedule.
“In his first season he was unbelievable,” Rolfes said. “His second season was also good, despite injury problems.”
He added that both parties agreed last summer that Boniface needed more training to return to peak condition.
Injury Setbacks Stall Progress
Boniface faced early challenges at Bremen. He struggled to secure a regular starting role during his first three months.
Before his injury, he made 11 appearances and registered two assists. However, a knee injury disrupted his campaign in December 2025.
He last played 11 minutes in a 3–2 loss to Hamburg. Subsequently, he returned to Leverkusen for rehabilitation.
Return Offers Timely Boost
Boniface resumed training with Bremen in late March. Now, his return provides a timely boost for the team.
Although he remained an unused substitute against Stuttgart, he could feature in upcoming fixtures against Augsburg, Hoffenheim, and Dortmund.
Bremen Target Bundesliga Safety
Werder Bremen sit 12th in the Bundesliga with 32 points. Therefore, they need at least three points from their final three matches to guarantee safety.
Boniface’s return strengthens their attacking options. As a result, he could play a key role in their survival push.
