Akume Warns Against School Closures Over Insecurity Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Wednesday in Abuja warned against continued school closures caused by insecurity, saying the development threatens Nigeria’s education system, national unity and long-term stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akume Calls for Safe Schools Across Nigeria

Speaking at the first triannual meeting of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council under the theme, “Religious Literacy for National Cohesion,” Akume stressed the need for stronger policies on safe schools and violence-free learning environments.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the SGF said insecurity continues to disrupt learning in many communities.

“A child cannot learn fraternity in fear; a nation cannot preach literacy while schools are under threat,” Akume said.

He added that government must protect children and ensure uninterrupted education nationwide.

Religious Leaders Urged to Promote Peace Before 2027 Polls

Akume also urged religious and traditional leaders to strengthen peace-building efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said faith-based and traditional institutions should intensify grassroots mobilisation, youth education and community engagement. According to him, such efforts would help reduce misinformation, stereotypes and identity-based conflicts.

“The 2027 general elections are fast approaching, and religious and traditional leaders have a moral responsibility to strengthen collaboration, promote tolerance and ensure peaceful coexistence,” he stated.

Furthermore, he warned politicians and other actors against exploiting religion and ethnic identity for political or economic interests.

He noted that such actions often trigger violence and social unrest.

Government Pushes Religious and Media Literacy

Akume emphasised that religious studies already exist in the national curriculum. However, he said authorities must now improve teaching quality through better-trained teachers, modern learning materials and value-based education.

He explained that religious literacy should go hand in hand with media and information literacy.

The SGF referenced Nigeria’s partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to encourage responsible information sharing and combat hate speech.

Stakeholders Asked to Strengthen National Cohesion

Akume expressed optimism that discussions at the NIREC meeting would produce practical solutions for national unity and peaceful coexistence.

He urged stakeholders to prioritize education and literacy as tools for development, peace-building and social stability.
