Nigeria football legend Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha remains the player with the most successful dribbles in a single FIFA World Cup match, FIFA has confirmed.

The world football governing body announced that Okocha achieved the record during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. He completed 15 successful dribbles against an Italian team renowned for its defensive strength. The match took place on July 5, 1994, in Boston, while Okocha’s remarkable display came against defenders such as Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, and Demetrio Albertini.

More than three decades later, no player has surpassed the Nigerian icon’s achievement.

Okocha Leads Historic World Cup Dribbling Chart

According to FIFA, Okocha tops the all-time list for the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup match.

Brazil’s Jairzinho ranks second after recording 13 successful dribbles against Uruguay at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. England midfielder Paul Gascoigne matched that tally against Cameroon during the 1990 tournament.

Nine other players share the next position with 12 successful dribbles in a World Cup match. The list includes Portugal’s Eusebio, West Germany’s Reinhard Libuda, the Netherlands’ Johan Cruyff, Italy’s Sandro Mazzola, Argentina’s Diego Maradona, and Germany’s Jamal Musiala.

Messi and Maradona Hold Other Dribbling Records

While Okocha owns the single-match record, Argentina captain Lionel Messi leads the overall World Cup dribbling rankings.

FIFA statistics show Messi completed 125 successful dribbles across his World Cup career, the highest total in tournament history.

Meanwhile, the late Diego Maradona holds the record for the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup edition. The Argentine legend completed 53 dribbles during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

Okocha’s Legacy Endures

Okocha remains one of Africa’s most gifted footballers. His creativity, flair, and exceptional ball control earned him global recognition throughout his career.

FIFA’s latest confirmation further strengthens his legacy as one of the greatest dribblers the sport has ever produced. Despite the emergence of several elite players over the years, his World Cup record continues to stand as a remarkable achievement in football history.
