By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Federal Government on Wednesday in Abuja launched eight operational gun trucks in Abuja to strengthen the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals against illegal mining activities across Nigeria, while officials from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Ministry of Interior outlined achievements, funding plans, and enforcement strategies during the unveiling of a two-year performance compendium.

Government Strengthens Security Response to Illegal Mining

The Federal Government has boosted enforcement capacity with eight newly commissioned gun trucks. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development led the initiative. The NSCDC Mining Marshals will deploy the vehicles nationwide. The goal is to curb illegal mining and protect mineral resources.

In addition, officials confirmed plans for more advanced equipment. They said approvals will depend on budgetary provisions. This move signals stronger federal intervention in the solid minerals sector.

Alake Highlights Arrests, Prosecutions, and Economic Gains

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, praised the Mining Marshals. He said they have arrested over 300 illegal miners. He also confirmed more than 150 prosecutions within two years.

Furthermore, Alake said the unit has secured multiple convictions involving local and foreign suspects. He added that the operations now support Nigeria’s non-oil revenue growth. As a result, the sector contributes more to economic diversification.

He also described illegal miners as “saboteurs.” He warned that the government will apply full legal measures. Meanwhile, he assured continued federal backing for the unit.

Interior Ministry Pledges Stronger Collaboration and Support

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, reaffirmed inter-agency cooperation. Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (Rtd.) represented him at the event. He praised the synergy between ministries and security agencies.

Moreover, he promised improved training and funding support. He also emphasized better logistics and firepower for future operations. Consequently, the government aims to strengthen internal security coordination.

NSCDC Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Mineral Resources

The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, expressed satisfaction with government support. Deputy Commandant General Zakari Ibrahim Ningi represented him.

He said illegal mining threatens national development. Therefore, he assured Nigerians of stronger enforcement. He added that the new gun trucks will support lawful operations only.

In addition, he stressed continued collaboration with sister agencies. This approach, he said, will improve operational success across mining zones.

Mining Marshals Record Operational Milestones in Two Years

The National Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Attah Onoja, highlighted key achievements. He noted improved coordination with federal ministries. He also praised logistical and institutional support.

Furthermore, he said the new equipment will boost field operations. He urged Nigerians to support enforcement efforts. He stressed that illegal mining represents theft of national wealth.
