ARGUNGU, Kebbi State — The Emir of Argungu, Muhammad Samaila Mera, has urged residents across the Argungu Emirate to legally acquire approved weapons for self-defence against bandits and terrorists. The monarch made the call during a meeting with district heads, village heads, and ward heads at his palace in Argungu. He said growing insecurity has left many communities vulnerable and stressed that lawful self-defence can help deter criminal attacks.
Emir Advocates Lawful Self-Defence
The Emir said many rural communities remain easy targets because they lack adequate means of protection.
According to him, criminals often attack villages without facing resistance. He noted that residents, including some community leaders, flee when bandits invade.
“When bandits attack, people start running, including village heads. This is happening because communities do not have adequate means of self-defence,” he said.
The monarch explained that security agencies cannot tackle the security crisis alone. Therefore, communities should support efforts to protect lives and property within the law.
Communities Should Pool Resources
The Emir encouraged residents to raise funds collectively and purchase legally approved weapons.
He stated that communities with lawful means of defence could discourage criminals from launching attacks.
“If you acquire such weapons legally, make sure the bandits are aware that your community possesses the means to defend itself. This alone can serve as a deterrent and discourage attacks,” he said.
He added that preparedness can strengthen community security and reduce vulnerability to attacks.
Emir Warns Against Ethnic Violence and Reprisals
Despite his call for self-defence, the Emir warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
He stressed that he would never support ethnic violence, unlawful killings, or attacks on innocent people.
According to him, many violent incidents result from reprisals. As a result, communities must avoid retaliatory attacks.
He warned that every unlawful killing fuels another cycle of revenge and worsens insecurity.
Islam Supports Protection of Lives and Communities
The traditional ruler said Islam does not encourage people to remain helpless in the face of criminal violence.
“It is not right for a Muslim to remain passive while criminals kill people, kidnap innocent citizens, and rape our women. Be prepared to defend yourselves, your families, and your communities against any attack,” he stated.
He emphasized that lawful self-defence remains a legitimate response to criminal threats.
Emir Raises Concern Over Armed Bandits
The Emir also discussed the security situation across the emirate.
He said many members of the Lakurawa group had reportedly left the area. However, he alleged that they left behind armed bandits who continue to terrorise communities.
According to him, some of these criminals still maintain links with former collaborators.
Consequently, he urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate closely with security agencies.
Community Cooperation Key to Security
The Emir called on residents throughout the Argungu Emirate to uphold the fear of God and support security efforts.
He maintained that vigilance, community cooperation, lawful self-defence, and respect for the rule of law remain critical to addressing insecurity.
Furthermore, he urged communities to report suspicious activities promptly and avoid actions that could escalate violence.
He concluded that collective responsibility remains essential for protecting lives and restoring peace across the emirate.
