The Federal Government on Friday joined millions of Nigerians in nationwide prayers to mark the 27th Democracy Day celebration scheduled for June 12, 2026. The prayer session took place during a special Juma’at service across the country. Government officials used the event to reaffirm their commitment to democratic governance, national unity, and sustainable development. The gathering also highlighted the importance of citizen participation, peaceful coexistence, and support for democratic institutions in strengthening Nigeria’s future.
Democracy Day Reflects Nigeria’s Democratic Progress
The Federal Government described the Juma’at service as a significant moment for reflection and national renewal. It noted that Nigeria’s progress, stability, and unity depend on effective governance and active citizen engagement.
According to the government, the annual Democracy Day celebration provides an opportunity to assess the nation’s democratic journey and strengthen public confidence in constitutional rule.

The government paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other pro-democracy advocates. It praised their sacrifices, courage, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.
Officials noted that Abiola remains a symbol of the people’s struggle for democracy and justice in Nigeria.

The Federal Government emphasized that Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance demonstrate the resilience of its institutions and citizens.
