The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) evacuated 418,500 tonnes of waste across Lagos State in May 2026, averaging 13,200 tonnes daily. The agency disclosed this on Thursday through its May operational performance report. Speaking on the report, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that the exercise aimed to improve waste collection, environmental sanitation, and service delivery across the state.

LAWMA Sustains Waste Collection Efforts

According to the report, 442 licensed Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators remained active across Lagos State during the period.

Gbadegesin said LAWMA continued to improve operational efficiency while addressing challenges within the state’s waste management system.

He revealed that 27 collection routes are currently under review. The agency expects the exercise to improve service coverage and collection efficiency.

Agency Clears 173 Waste Black Spots

LAWMA also removed waste from 173 black spots across the state in May.

The cleanup covered road medians, markets, bus stops, and other public areas affected by indiscriminate waste disposal.

According to Gbadegesin, the agency remains committed to maintaining cleaner public spaces and preventing environmental degradation.

Customer Engagement and Service Delivery Improve

The agency received 474 complaints and service requests during the review period.

Gbadegesin noted that LAWMA continues to strengthen its customer engagement system. He added that efforts are ongoing to improve response times and service delivery.

Equipment Deployment Supports Operations

To support waste evacuation activities, LAWMA currently deploys 77 compactor trucks, five skip trucks, and 12 additional operational equipment units across Lagos.

The agency has also intensified route restructuring, operational monitoring, and infrastructure upgrades.

Furthermore, LAWMA continues to deploy more equipment and enforce environmental regulations to improve sanitation standards.

Residents Urged to Support Clean Environment

Gbadegesin urged residents to patronise approved PSP operators and report service gaps through official channels.

He also advised residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal.

“Lagos operates one of the largest urban waste management systems in Africa. Meeting the demands of a growing population requires continuous investment, infrastructure upgrades, enforcement, and stakeholder collaboration,” he said.

LAWMA Reaffirms Commitment to Cleaner Lagos

The LAWMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to cleaner communities and improved service standards.

He stressed that the authority would continue building a resilient and sustainable waste management system for Lagos State.
